woop woop, welcome to the obsessive side of ruhani.
This is the place where I reblog... stuff
if you are anti-feminist you are either anti-woman or you have no fucking idea what feminism meansOr you’re in a group of people who’ve been neglected by the movement in the past, like women of color, trans women, and sex workers and you don’t feel like feminists are on your side, so you don’t identify as a feminist but you still have feminist beliefs and ideals.
sitting in silence with your best friend is actually really nice because youre together and youre just happy to be together even if the both of you are just scrolling through tumblr and twitter because you occasionally point something else to the other person and laugh and maybe talk but youre just comfortable and together and thats enough
If you’re white and you’ve seen a criticism of whiteness, the upholding of white supremacy and white hegemony and said “I’m not like that”, YOU ARE EXACTLY LIKE THAT. You’re being an example of being “like that”. If you can’t just sit back and listen and understand that white supremacy is systemic and ingrained in all of you, you are “like that”. You are “one of those white people”.
SERIOUSLY? STANNIS IS AHEAD OF MICHONNE? THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
Like idk, I feel like it’s really easy for white people to be like, “well Uhura was just a glorified telephone operator, who cares?” Without any consideration to what she represented. What she continues to represent. Nichelle Nichols had to endure so much to just do her job and play that role. The network treated her so badly she wanted to quit after the first season (among other things the network kept her from seeing her fan mail) but Martin Luther King Jr asked her to stay because Uhura was such an important figure. Uhura matters. To name just one thing she inspired Mae Jemison to become an astronaut.
And after all that there are people who want her to die horribly because she get’s in the way of your pretty white boys kissing.
And no matter who much you try to push her aside for the sake of white men she will always matter.
Especially in the fucking face of executive producers in 2012 saying explicitly that ‘BLACK PEOPLE DO NOT SEE THEMSELVES IN THE FUTURE’
With all the Black people who got into science fiction BECAUSE OF HER. Whoopi fucking Goldberg said she was inspired to be Guinan because of Uhura.
But of course, white people want to downplay everything Uhura stands for.
Uhura’s job is also vital. People want to characterize her as a telephone operator? Telephone operators were, at one point, the only people who could put you in touch with another person. Uhura is a linguist and a communicator and Kirk sure as shit could not intercept subspace radio frequencies or whatever without her. Uhura LISTENS. Uhura knows nuance. Uhura is the shit.
If Uhuru was unimportant, think about this.
How much longer would it have been before there was an interracial kiss on television?
How many other shows might or might not have tried to have Black female leads who were not dependent for their personalities as part of a married couple or as being the sassy help?
I can’t with White people.
Furthermore in the reboot verse has Uhura not backed up Kirk’s feelings with her actual knowlegde and ability to translate, Spock would have had him thrown off/not the ending/WHOLE fucking plot would have been different.
See, this shit is why I do not fandom ever. EVER. White people ruined it forever.
This is why representation matters.
